... Okay, even now she knows that can't be right. No matter how good he is, he's not a ghost. She turns her head slightly, glancing over her shoulder. The chamber is gloomy enough that the speaker might have gone unnoticed to human eyes, but Blake's eyes are better than that.

A speaker. So that's it... nothing but theatrics. He really is just a human after all.

Slade's tipped his hand with that last trick, but she doesn't let on that she's aware right away. Now that she knows, she can at least stop being thrown off by the direction his voice is coming from. Listen for other things, sounds of movement, breathing....

"Was all of this just so you could offer me a job?"

Unfortunately for Blake, despite the theatrics, Slade is not just a human. The government took that from him a long time ago. The second she looks at the speaker and back, he is standing right in front of her, having moved as silently as death.

He stands in front of her casually, with no apparent defensive stance, as the light and steam swirl about him. "Let's not get ahead of ourselves; you haven't passed the interview, yet."

That sudden appearance actually gets a startled reaction from her. How could he be that fast, and that quiet? That shouldn't be possible!

As Slade has doubtlessly already observed, Blake isn't human herself either. A sudden powerful leap lifts her into the air, easily clearing her height a few times over and she kicks off the gear, a quickly conjured Shadow gives her a boost in height and she twists in midair.

Gambol Shroud folds down and she casts her arm back, intending to throw the weapon and hopefully use the reach of the long black ribbon to gain some advantage. She might not be able to win this fight, but she should at least be able to hold him off long enough to make an escape.

Slade does not hesitate to pursue her. He likewise kicks off of the machinery and launches himself at her (at about 30 mph) while thrusting at her with his staff. He makes no attempt to defend himself from any attack she may make, going for pure offense.

"I'm not done with you yet, young lady!"

The staff strikes another Shadow, causing it to fizzle out from the impact. It's around then she demonstrates the first of her tricks. Projecting the Shadow actually pushes her up and at a different direction, suddenly at a whole different angle.

There's a bang as Gambol Shroud fires, the extra force propelling the spinning sickle blade toward Slade.

For the first time, Slade appears to be caught off guard. His one visible eye widens nanoseconds before the blade connects with his face mask, discharging sparks as it lodges into the metal. Slade falls to the ground with the blade still lodged in tight.

Blake lands a short distance away, clutching the black ribbon in one hand and hesitates as she looks across to find the weapon embedded in Slade's mask.

A sudden gut-wrenching feeling grips her. She hadn't even thought before that last attack, just listened to instinct and training and struck. Had she just...?

No. She couldn't think about that. Wrapping the ribbon around her wrist, she pulls back on it and yanks the weapon back toward her, possibly with the mask as well if the blade is embedded deep enough.

The metal mask comes flying back with the blade, leaving the body lying still in the darkness.

Then... the mask starts chuckling sinisterly.

She catches the weapon as it comes back with the mask in tow, pausing a moment to inspect it. No blood.

Then it starts laughing and she recoils in surprise, nearly dropping it. The shock dissipates quickly though, as she remembers his earlier trick with the speakers, and her eyes narrow.

"I suppose I should have known better than to think it would be that easy." She says that, but a part of her is relieved to find that she didn't just take a life. No matter whose life that may be.

The mask apparently has a microphone in addition to a speaker, because it responds to Blake's comment. "Yes, you should have, but I am nevertheless impressed. Congratulations, Blake, you passed the first test. I'll be keeping in touch."

Then, the mask starts beeping:
Beep................ Beep.............. Beep............ Beep.......... Beep........ Beep...... Beep.... Beep... Beep.. Beep Beep Beep

[personal profile] descendsfromshadow 2014-05-31 06:28 am (UTC)(link)
"How do you know--?"

She doesn't finish the question before the mask stops talking and starts... beeping?

... Oh.

Gripping the mask, she rears her arm back and throws it away as hard as she can. Without even waiting for it to hit the ground, she's off as fast as she can go in the opposite direction, jumping over gears and machines.

She doesn't know how big that blast is going to be. Only that she needs to put as much distance and as many obstructions between her and it as she possibly can.

The blast doesn't actually come from the mask, but from the robotic duplicate of Slade that Blake defeated. The blast is impressive, but Blake's instinct to run clearly saved her life.

Minutes later, on Blake's cellphone, a text message arrives: "Til next time"
[According to the phone, the sender used Blake's own phone number.]
