Instead, Slade slips out of sight through gears and and turbines and steam, resuming the game of cat and mouse.
"Have I got you running scared, little girl?" comes his voice from her right.
"Have you realized you're out of your depth?" comes his voice from her left.
no subject
Back to this again. She holds her weapons up defensively as she puts her back to one of the large machines again and slowly backs toward her, eyes flickering right and then left at the sound of that voice.
"You might find I have one or two surprises left."
no subject
Slade's voice comes from above his prey, this time. "Only one or two? I had expected better of you, Blake."
The location of the voice suddenly shifts to dead ahead, somewhere in the darkness among rotating gears. "I know you are capable of so much more. You try to hide your nature from the world, but I see you for what you truly are. You are gifted. Special."
no subject
Slade knowing her name is enough, but the implication in that last statement of his. Hiding her nature. Does he know that much? Could he?
"I don't know what you're talking about." Hearing the voice coming from straight ahead, she raises her weapons, continuing to back up until her back is to one of the machines again.
no subject
The source of the voice changes again. This time, it is right behind Blake, as if coming from the giant gear that her back is against.
"We can work on that, though. We can work on many things. I can make you better than you could ever imagine."
[Note: Slade is using a series of speakers he has set up throughout his lair for misdirection. If Blake turns around, she'll probably be able to spot the speaker that was used for that last line.]
no subject
A speaker. So that's it... nothing but theatrics. He really is just a human after all.
Slade's tipped his hand with that last trick, but she doesn't let on that she's aware right away. Now that she knows, she can at least stop being thrown off by the direction his voice is coming from. Listen for other things, sounds of movement, breathing....
"Was all of this just so you could offer me a job?"
no subject
He stands in front of her casually, with no apparent defensive stance, as the light and steam swirl about him. "Let's not get ahead of ourselves; you haven't passed the interview, yet."
no subject
As Slade has doubtlessly already observed, Blake isn't human herself either. A sudden powerful leap lifts her into the air, easily clearing her height a few times over and she kicks off the gear, a quickly conjured Shadow gives her a boost in height and she twists in midair.
Gambol Shroud folds down and she casts her arm back, intending to throw the weapon and hopefully use the reach of the long black ribbon to gain some advantage. She might not be able to win this fight, but she should at least be able to hold him off long enough to make an escape.
no subject
"I'm not done with you yet, young lady!"
no subject
There's a bang as Gambol Shroud fires, the extra force propelling the spinning sickle blade toward Slade.

A sudden gut-wrenching feeling grips her. She hadn't even thought before that last attack, just listened to instinct and training and struck. Had she just...?
No. She couldn't think about that. Wrapping the ribbon around her wrist, she pulls back on it and yanks the weapon back toward her, possibly with the mask as well if the blade is embedded deep enough.
no subject
Then... the mask starts chuckling sinisterly.
no subject
Then it starts laughing and she recoils in surprise, nearly dropping it. The shock dissipates quickly though, as she remembers his earlier trick with the speakers, and her eyes narrow.
"I suppose I should have known better than to think it would be that easy." She says that, but a part of her is relieved to find that she didn't just take a life. No matter whose life that may be.
no subject
Then, the mask starts beeping:
Beep................ Beep.............. Beep............ Beep.......... Beep........ Beep...... Beep.... Beep... Beep.. Beep Beep Beep
no subject
She doesn't finish the question before the mask stops talking and starts... beeping?
... Oh.
Gripping the mask, she rears her arm back and throws it away as hard as she can. Without even waiting for it to hit the ground, she's off as fast as she can go in the opposite direction, jumping over gears and machines.
She doesn't know how big that blast is going to be. Only that she needs to put as much distance and as many obstructions between her and it as she possibly can.

Minutes later, on Blake's cellphone, a text message arrives: "Til next time"
[According to the phone, the sender used Blake's own phone number.]
