Slade's superhuman reflexes allow him to move in less time than takes for Blake to pull the trigger. With his enhanced strength, he grabs her wrist with his free hand while pushing up on Gambol Shroud with his sword, then tries to pull her into an Aikido wrist lock.

The shots from her weapon go wile as Slade moves, bolts of violet energy firing off into the spinning gears and darkness. That superhuman strength of his is a definite edge, but Blake's been trained well and a good part of her training is in dealing with enemies that are bigger and stronger than she is.

She twists her wrist to keep it free from that hold, just long enough to reach over her shoulder and seize the handle on Gambol Shroud's sheath. A button press and a metal plate to slide open, revealing a heavy cleaver-like blade and with Slade's sword tied up she pulls it free in a wide sweeping slash.

Slade's sword goes flying through the air and falls through the gears into the darkness below. Slade does a graceful backflip away from his opponent while retrieving a collapsible staff from his belt, which he snaps to full length as he lands and spins into a defensive stance.

"Good. Very good." he comments to himself, seeming to approve of Blake's performance.

Blake shakes her head a bit, shaking off the lingering effects of that grenade. Weapons held up, she narrows her eyes at Slade.

'Good?' That almost sounded like he was appraising her. For some reason, that incenses her more than anything else.

With a sharp cry, she springs forward, bringing the heavier blade down before spinning to follow it up with an upward strike from the thinner blade.

Slade's fluid movements make it seem like he barely even has to try to dodge Blake's lightning-fast attacks.

"Very impressive, young lady."

He does doesn't even bother parrying with his staff; he just casually sidesteps or ducks under every slash and thrust of her weapon.

"With some proper training, you might actually be a threat."

With a sudden rapid movement, Slade slides between Blake's legs like someone sliding into homeplate in a baseball game. As he slides and pops back up behind her, he holds his staff in a perpendicular position to his body, the effect being a very difficult-to-dodge trip attack on Blake.

This is bad. Blake grits her teeth as Slade effortlessly dodges out of the way of her strikes... it's more than a little frustrating but more than that, each dodge causes a sort of dread to well up in the pit of her stomach.

He's better than she is, realizes.

Her only answer to his mocking is to give another yell, punctuated with another powerful swing at his head. And then her eyes widen as he's suddenly just not there anymore.

The staff takes her feet out from under her, and she makes a frustrated sound even as she catches herself with her hand and suddenly speeds away several feet, leaving behind a Shadow to hopefully distract him until she can recover from her current far-too-vulnerable position.

Decoys are one of Slade's go-to tactics, one that he'd mastered long before this girl was even born. Combined with his superhuman senses, Slade knows a decoy when he sees one, and wastes no time on the Shadow.

Instead, Slade slips out of sight through gears and and turbines and steam, resuming the game of cat and mouse.

"Have I got you running scared, little girl?" comes his voice from her right.

"Have you realized you're out of your depth?" comes his voice from her left.

It only takes her an instant to regain her footing, the Shadow melting away just as quickly, and she turns just in time to catch a glimpse of Slade fading into the darkness once again.

Back to this again. She holds her weapons up defensively as she puts her back to one of the large machines again and slowly backs toward her, eyes flickering right and then left at the sound of that voice.

"You might find I have one or two surprises left."

Slade's voice comes from above his prey, this time. "Only one or two? I had expected better of you, Blake."

The location of the voice suddenly shifts to dead ahead, somewhere in the darkness among rotating gears. "I know you are capable of so much more. You try to hide your nature from the world, but I see you for what you truly are. You are gifted. Special."

For the first time in this fight, Blake's blood runs cold. Trapped, cornered and outmatched by her enemy? That she can deal with, she's been trained and prepared for that but this....

Slade knowing her name is enough, but the implication in that last statement of his. Hiding her nature. Does he know that much? Could he?

"I don't know what you're talking about." Hearing the voice coming from straight ahead, she raises her weapons, continuing to back up until her back is to one of the machines again.

"Tsk, tsk" says the voice from the darkness. "You are not as good a liar as you are a fighter."

The source of the voice changes again. This time, it is right behind Blake, as if coming from the giant gear that her back is against.

"We can work on that, though. We can work on many things. I can make you better than you could ever imagine."

[Note: Slade is using a series of speakers he has set up throughout his lair for misdirection. If Blake turns around, she'll probably be able to spot the speaker that was used for that last line.]

... Okay, even now she knows that can't be right. No matter how good he is, he's not a ghost. She turns her head slightly, glancing over her shoulder. The chamber is gloomy enough that the speaker might have gone unnoticed to human eyes, but Blake's eyes are better than that.

A speaker. So that's it... nothing but theatrics. He really is just a human after all.

Slade's tipped his hand with that last trick, but she doesn't let on that she's aware right away. Now that she knows, she can at least stop being thrown off by the direction his voice is coming from. Listen for other things, sounds of movement, breathing....

"Was all of this just so you could offer me a job?"

[personal profile] whoneedsdepthperception 2014-05-30 04:12 am (UTC)(link)
Unfortunately for Blake, despite the theatrics, Slade is not just a human. The government took that from him a long time ago. The second she looks at the speaker and back, he is standing right in front of her, having moved as silently as death.

He stands in front of her casually, with no apparent defensive stance, as the light and steam swirl about him. "Let's not get ahead of ourselves; you haven't passed the interview, yet."

That sudden appearance actually gets a startled reaction from her. How could he be that fast, and that quiet? That shouldn't be possible!

As Slade has doubtlessly already observed, Blake isn't human herself either. A sudden powerful leap lifts her into the air, easily clearing her height a few times over and she kicks off the gear, a quickly conjured Shadow gives her a boost in height and she twists in midair.

Gambol Shroud folds down and she casts her arm back, intending to throw the weapon and hopefully use the reach of the long black ribbon to gain some advantage. She might not be able to win this fight, but she should at least be able to hold him off long enough to make an escape.

Slade does not hesitate to pursue her. He likewise kicks off of the machinery and launches himself at her (at about 30 mph) while thrusting at her with his staff. He makes no attempt to defend himself from any attack she may make, going for pure offense.

"I'm not done with you yet, young lady!"

[personal profile] descendsfromshadow 2014-05-30 05:12 am (UTC)(link)
The staff strikes another Shadow, causing it to fizzle out from the impact. It's around then she demonstrates the first of her tricks. Projecting the Shadow actually pushes her up and at a different direction, suddenly at a whole different angle.

There's a bang as Gambol Shroud fires, the extra force propelling the spinning sickle blade toward Slade.

For the first time, Slade appears to be caught off guard. His one visible eye widens nanoseconds before the blade connects with his face mask, discharging sparks as it lodges into the metal. Slade falls to the ground with the blade still lodged in tight.
descendsfromshadow: (The BUTLER did it)

[personal profile] descendsfromshadow 2014-05-31 04:42 am (UTC)(link)
Blake lands a short distance away, clutching the black ribbon in one hand and hesitates as she looks across to find the weapon embedded in Slade's mask.

A sudden gut-wrenching feeling grips her. She hadn't even thought before that last attack, just listened to instinct and training and struck. Had she just...?

No. She couldn't think about that. Wrapping the ribbon around her wrist, she pulls back on it and yanks the weapon back toward her, possibly with the mask as well if the blade is embedded deep enough.

[personal profile] whoneedsdepthperception 2014-05-31 04:51 am (UTC)(link)
The metal mask comes flying back with the blade, leaving the body lying still in the darkness.

Then... the mask starts chuckling sinisterly.
descendsfromshadow: (Unhappy Face)

[personal profile] descendsfromshadow 2014-05-31 05:33 am (UTC)(link)
She catches the weapon as it comes back with the mask in tow, pausing a moment to inspect it. No blood.

Then it starts laughing and she recoils in surprise, nearly dropping it. The shock dissipates quickly though, as she remembers his earlier trick with the speakers, and her eyes narrow.

"I suppose I should have known better than to think it would be that easy." She says that, but a part of her is relieved to find that she didn't just take a life. No matter whose life that may be.
whoneedsdepthperception: (Default)

[personal profile] whoneedsdepthperception 2014-05-31 06:06 am (UTC)(link)
The mask apparently has a microphone in addition to a speaker, because it responds to Blake's comment. "Yes, you should have, but I am nevertheless impressed. Congratulations, Blake, you passed the first test. I'll be keeping in touch."

Then, the mask starts beeping:
Beep................ Beep.............. Beep............ Beep.......... Beep........ Beep...... Beep.... Beep... Beep.. Beep Beep Beep
descendsfromshadow: (pic#7149890)

[personal profile] descendsfromshadow 2014-05-31 06:28 am (UTC)(link)
"How do you know--?"

She doesn't finish the question before the mask stops talking and starts... beeping?

... Oh.

Gripping the mask, she rears her arm back and throws it away as hard as she can. Without even waiting for it to hit the ground, she's off as fast as she can go in the opposite direction, jumping over gears and machines.

She doesn't know how big that blast is going to be. Only that she needs to put as much distance and as many obstructions between her and it as she possibly can.

[personal profile] whoneedsdepthperception 2014-05-31 06:56 am (UTC)(link)
The blast doesn't actually come from the mask, but from the robotic duplicate of Slade that Blake defeated. The blast is impressive, but Blake's instinct to run clearly saved her life.

Minutes later, on Blake's cellphone, a text message arrives: "Til next time"
[According to the phone, the sender used Blake's own phone number.]
